Anyone searching for a family activity should consider a fishing trip from New Quay, Ceredigion, with Epic Fishing (07989 496526).
Not only should you go home with the raw materials for at least one BBQ, but you will be unlucky not to see a wealth of wildlife. Dolphins are not in the marketing material, but we’ve yet to draw a blank on these.
Our family trip with Tim and Corinne on 8 July 2017 was particularly memorable. We started with some spectacular dolphins, then had close-ups with porpoises and shearwaters as we steamed out to a reef to fish for shark.
Each boy (9 and 10) caught a large tope, while their mother caught four bull huss (a very large dog fish).
Meanwhile I was busy catching bream and mackerel – we returned late afternoon to the harbour for fish and chips on the beach . . . wood-seared fish were definitely on the menu all day Sunday.
Tim and Corinne operate two-hour family-friendly and all-day charter trips from New Quay. Their prices start at £20 for adults, £10 for children and the boat takes up to 10, so trips are personalised and can be exclusive (if you have the numbers). Phone Tim on 07989 496526 – and it’s worth booking ahead in high season.
You may also want to combine this with an en route visit to St David’s and Pentre Ifan.
